JessC’s positive musical energy radiates this Raya

THE entertainment scene has just welcomed a festive surprise for Hari Raya, courtesy of InterContinental Music Award (ICMA) Best Asian Pop winner JessC.

JessC, or Jessie Chung, has — for the first time — teamed up with all-round entertainer and TV host Datuk AC Mizal to release a new single ‘Mari Menari Raya’.

This song, promises JessC, injects a youthful, energetic and international sound into traditional Raya music and combines melodious festive sounds with infectious hip-hop.

She said: “The song blends hip-hop with contemporary pop music, bringing a refreshing rhythm and vibrant energy to traditional Hari Raya songs.

“It features lively arrangements, the result of which is a modern sound that retains the cultural warmth and spirit of Raya while presenting it through a global pop perspective.”

JessC added that the song was one of the most challenging works she had taken on in recent years.

“The rhythm of this song is very powerful, and the inclusion of rap elements makes it a completely new experience for me.

“I hope that during Hari Raya, everyone can celebrate the joy of the festive season through ‘Mari Menari Raya’.”

JessC delivers melodious lead vocals with her uplifting voice, while AC contributes energetic rap verses.

JessC said: “The fusion of our distinct musical styles creates a dynamic performance that fills the song with vitality.”

She praised AC’s professionalism during the recording process.

“He is extremely dedicated and professional. Every detail was handled with great care. Even though it was our first collaboration, we had great chemistry, and that really brought an extra spark to the song.”

JessC added that she chose to work with AC, of hip-hop group 4U2C, as he is widely recognised as a television host and comedian.

“Over the years, AC has remained active across film, television, music and variety shows, earning admiration from audiences of all ages,” she said, adding that he also brought warmth and humour to the production process.

“During the music video filming, he frequently shared jokes on set and maintained a friendly smile throughout, creating a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere. His presence filled the set with laughter and festive warmth.”

AC praised JessC and her production team and said: “In my more than 30 years in the entertainment industry, this is one of the most professional and outstanding teams I have ever seen.

” ‘Mari Menari Raya’ captures some of the most heartwarming moments of Hari Raya celebrations, including festive lights, the night of Takbir, open houses, traditional delicacies and joyful family reunions.

“The song also reflects Malaysia’s multicultural spirit, and we both hope it will bring positive energy to people and allow music to serve as a bridge connecting hearts.”

JessC said that it was her second Raya song after ‘Satu Suara Raya’ last year, which received more than 1.5 million YouTube views.

“That success gave me the confidence to create another Raya song for younger audiences.

“This year we wanted something different with a more rhythmic style, and AC immediately came to mind as he is well known for his rap and stage energy.”

JessC admitted that the hip-hop section was the biggest challenge as the rhythm was very fast.

“The first time I tried recording it, I couldn’t keep up with the tempo.

“But that joyful atmosphere actually made the recording process very special.”

JessC revealed that her favourite Raya songs are De Fam’s ‘Alamak Raya Lagi’ and Datuk Sudirman Arshad’s ‘Balik Kampung’.

” ‘Alamak Raya Lagi’ has a very lively and modern rhythm, while ‘Balik Kampung’ is a timeless classic that beautifully captures the warmth of reuniting with family.”

JessC’s fondest Raya memory during childhood was when her Malay friend, a bank manager, invited her family to his open house almost every year.

“Another memorable experience was when I was invited by the King to attend a Raya celebration and sing. Unfortunately, I was in Australia and couldn’t attend, so, he sent me Raya cookies and a watch.”

She thinks that Malaysia is very special because people of different faiths celebrate each other’s festivals together.

“This kind of cultural exchange is very precious and reflects the unity, inclusiveness and harmony of Malaysian society.”

JessC mainly sings in English, Malay and Chinese, and occasionally in Japanese.

“If there were a Raya-themed movie, I think it would be wonderful to work with Fauziah Latiff and AC.

“Fauziah has a very graceful acting presence, and she is able to portray compassionate characters beautifully.

“AC has a very strong screen presence and natural charisma.”

Her dream collaborator is Datuk Sheila Majid, whose music has an international flavour as well as a strong Malaysian identity.

“Sheila’s musical style blends pop, jazz, and world music influences, which I truly admire.”

JessC plans to invite AC as a special guest to her year-end concert.

“I hope to bring more new works in both music and acting.”
